School Bus Illustration
To think that was me many years ago the excitement, nerves and question that were all on my mind. What was going to happen, who was I going to meet, and is my teacher going to be mean? These were all thoughts that happened to me when I was going to go on the bus when I was younger. The picture we had to pick apart on the first day of class is when these thoughts came back to me.
I still wonder what was truly happening in the illustration. Were the kids coming or going to school, what did their facial expressions mean, how old were these kids, were they going on a field trip? When interpreting a illustration you never know whats going on in the image unless the illustration has text explaining the picture in depth so, the thoughts you process are the best thoughts you can have.
I believe that this picture was to illustrate on how education has changed and how children has different thoughts of school with how they will be taught and how many things aren't in their control when they are in school, for example what to read, what is due, and when it is due. I hope schools make children have their own thoughts and help be independent at the end of their careers up till high school.
Your post has prompted me to remember a few of my own younger school days, so many years ago. I found it interesting that you wondered if your teacher would be mean. Did you have such an experience? After one elementary teacher I had, I used to wonder the same thing. We may never know the answers to many of the questions you have raised concerning the school children in the picture. Who they were, what they were thinking, and what their day held in store for them was never recorded.
ReplyDeleteMy question for you is: has school really changed that much since then? Sure, scientific advances have been made, reading lists have been updated, technology has been introduced, and the hickory stick has been abolished. But the same subjects are still taught. Homework is still assigned. Assignments are still graded. Hours are still regulated. All things considered, I think that the organization and structure of school has changed very little since then.
Marissa,
ReplyDeleteWhile reading your blog, I thought back to when I was that age. I remember my mind wandering aimlessly about as I waited in those single file lines to go places. The picture of the school bus raises many interesting questions. I mean are those kids bored like Gatto says? If only we could have saw the whole story associated with the picture. Maybe it would paint the picture for our interpretations of what is really going on. There is always a story that is intriguing our minds. I agree with your blog in saying that the school bus picture is that story intriguing out minds.
